Who departed this life
June 4 1854
Aged 59 years
Ann Dike (née Norris) (1795 – 4 June 1854)
Ann was born in Great Shelford and was baptised there on Christmas Day 1795. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (née Matthews) Norris and married carpenter John Dike(1796-1874) at St. Mary the Less Church in 1821. They lived at South Street, East Road and had at least seven children: Norris (1822-1823), James (1823-1857), Charles William (1826-1872), Norris William (1828-1871), John (1830-1842), Mary (1834-1917) and Henry Goodman (1836-1854). Ann died at home ‘after a long and painful illness’ and her funeral was held on 8 June.
John Dike married for a second time in 1855 to twice widowed Elizabeth Cowley (née Bright). He died at home aged 78 years old, but is not believed to have been buried with his first wife.
John and Ann’s sons James, Charles and Norris all emigrated to Australia and died there. Their youngest son Henry was buried in the St Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery in 1854 and is believed to have been buried in the same grave as his mother.
Henry Goodman Dike (21 January 1836 – 14 December 1854)
Henry was baptised on 24 August 1836 at St. Mary the Less Church and died at South Street aged 19 years old. He was buried at Mill road Cemetery on 18 December 1854.
