Harry Dowe (c.1849 – 2 April 1922)

Harry was the son of James and Anne (née Woods) and was baptised at St Mary the Less Church on 26 January 1849. James Dowe was a plumber and Anne worked as a college bedmaker. Harry grew up at Trumpington Street (1851), and 45 Newnham (1861). By the age of 23 he was working as a carpenter. In January 1969 he was brought to the magistrate’s court by builder James Kidd, who Harry was an apprentice to.  Kidd accused him of  ‘absenting himself from his service on the 15th without just cause’.  Harry had been given until 2pm to go to work but by his own admission he had drunk too much the night before  and did not go to work until the next full day.  He was fined  40s and costs, and if he did not pay was to be sentenced to 21 days hard labour.

He married Emma Willson on August 15 1870 at Christ Church, Cambridge and the couple had eight children: Emma Jane (1870-1873), Catherine Ellen (1872-1960), Lilly (1874-1895), Harry (1878-1952), Emma Jane (1880-1957), Rose Beatrice (1882-1973), Albert Edward (1885-1946) and Grace Emily (1892-1948).

Initially the couple lived with Harry’s widowed father at 45 Newnham (1871) but later moved too 42 Newnahm (1881-1901) and then 44 Newnham (1911).  Harry continued to work as a carpenter and died at home aged 73 years old.

Emma Mary Dowe  (née Willson) (c. 1848 – 9 May 1926)

Little is known of Emma’s early life.  The 1871 census gives her birthplace as Shoreditch, London, but every other census records her being born in Cambridge. She worked as a laundress in the early part of the marriage, and died at 44 Newnham.

The age on her death registration and grave monument is given as 78 years, but  through her life census records would put her age as 74 years old when she died.
