John Drayton (19 April 1869 – 21 December 1934)
John was the son of James John and Sarah Ann Drayton. He was born in Kings Lynn, and was brought up on Crooked Lane. His father was a water bargeman, and John followed his father to become a bargeman too by the time he was 22 years old (1891). He married Bertha Betts on 30 April 1892 at St Andrews Church, Grimsby.
John and Bertha had four children: Frank Roland (1895-1980), Emma (1897-1990), Alfred (1904-1916) and Jack Leslie (1906-1962). Frank and Emma were born in Kings Lynn, and then they appear to have moved as a family to Cambridge. In 1901 they were living at 17 and 18 Fitzroy Street, and John was working as a corn merchant. In 1911 the family were living at 35 City Road, and John was by now a marine engineer. He served as a corporal (Labour Corps) in the first world war and saw action in France from May 1915 to December 1917 before being invalided out in March 1918 due to a double hernia.
John Drayton died in Cambridge in December 1934 aged 65 years old.
Bertha Drayton (nee Betts) (16 July 1873 – 13 September 1950)
Bertha was born in Shouldham in Norfolk, and baptised there on 23 March 1879. She was the daughter of Henry Betts, a grocery assistant, and his wife Susan. By the age of 18 she was still living at home at 6 Thomas Street in Kings Lynn, and working as a dressmaker. She married John Drayton when she was 18 years old.
After being widowed she lived at 4 City Road, Cambridge with her son Jack who was a storekeeper and order clerk. She died in 1950 aged 77 years old.
Alfred Drayton (14 March 1904 – 19 March 1916)
Alfred was the third of the four children born to John and Bertha Drayton. He died a few days after his 12th birthday.
