Edmund John Edwards (1856 – 10 March 1902)
Edmund was born in Cambridge and was the son of Robert and Emma Edwards. In 1871 he was living at 82 East Road with his paternal grandmother Elizabeth, who ran the Trotters Bay pub at that address. He married Ann Elizabeth Clee on 12th December 1886. Ann was known as Elizabeth, and was the daughter of Charles and Mary Clee. Edmund and Elizabeth had at least three children: George Victor [1891-], Mildred Kate [1895-], and Ivy Rose [1901-1934].
In November 1890 he appeared in front of the Cambridge Borough Police Court charged with assaulting Lilly Clee, his sister in law on 27th October. He was further charged with threatening Lily on the 29th of October. He was ‘fined 40s plus costs, order to be bound over himself in £20, and two sureties in £10 each and to keep the peace for six months’.
In 1891 Edmund was living as a boarder at 56 Fitzroy Street and working as a labourer. Ann meanwhile was living at 26 Panton Street with her mother Mary Ann and was helping her with her laundry business. By at least 1896 Edmund was living at 36 Fitzroy Street, and working as a tripe merchant. The freehold of the premises was sold in November 1896 and was advertised as ‘suitable for a butchers or like business. The back premises are approached from a roadway leading from Gold Street, as in the occupation of Edmund J Edwards at rent of £30 per annum, tenant paying rates’.
Edmund died at 36 Fitzroy Street aged 46 years old. His widow Elizabeth married Harry Smith in January 1903 and went on to have a further two sons from her second marriage
