Emma Sherlock Ellis née Summers (14 November 1832 – 20 April 1917)
Little is known of Emma’s early life but she was born in Cambridge. She married George Ellis in the parish of Andrew the Less on November 5th 1854 and they had seven children: Vincent (1855-1929), George Chapman (1856-), Sarah (1858-), James (1860-1932), Charles Alfred (1862-1931), Alice Emma (1868-) and Emma Summers (1870-). George worked as a bootcloser and the family lived at 13 Church Street (1861/1871), 6 City Road (1881-1901). By 1911 George had retired and the couple were living at 1 Miller Cottage, Victoria Friendly Societies Almshouses in Chesterton. Emma died aged 85 years old.
George Ellis (1 December 1834 – 29 December 1919)
George was the son of James and Hester (née Chapman). His father had died by 1851 when George was living with his laundress mother on Victoria Street and working as an apprentice boot closer. In 1867 his friend Joseph Redfarn (possibly a relation) died and George had to take on the care of his children using the assets left in Joseph’s will (property & 6 cows) .He applied for relief but was told milk from 6 cows would be sufficient to sustain the children.
He died aged 85 years old.
