By 1881 they had moved to 16 Kings Parade, where they lived with Emily’s mother, two servants and lodger Charles Bayley. Edward Tweed (snr) had committed suicide in August 1879 – he and Mary had been living apart and the inquest heard that he ‘was in embarrassed circumstances and had appeared rather disponding of late. He owed his landlady six weeks’ rent’.

He died at home aged 73 years old and his funeral was held at Old Chesterton Church on 12 June, before interment at Mill Road Cemetery. There were no flowers ‘by his own request’.
