Charles Samuel Millard (1853 – 23 November 1926)
Charles was born in Shoreditch and was the son of Samuel and Harriet (née Spall). He was baptised in Suffolk on 26 August and by 1860 the family had moved to 13 Brandon Place. Samuel Millard was a joiner/carpenter and Charles also trained and worked as a joiner. In 1871 he was living with his family and sister Georgiana at Weybridge Cottage, Gwydir Street. He married Mary Firth in York in 1875 and they had two children: Catherine May (1876-1955) and Henry William Charles (1881-1936). They lived in Arundel, Sussex for a while where son Henry was born but by 1891 had returned to Cambridge. The family lived at 16 Princes Street (1891), 23 Norwich Street (1901) and 10 Melbourne Place (1920). In 1901 Charles and Mary were documented as having a foster son – James Edward Jenkins (1895-). Charles died in Cambridge aged 73 years old.
Mary Teresa Millard (née Firth) (d 1925)
Mary was born in Allerton cum Hopperton, near Knaresborough, Yorkshire, the daughter of William and Catherine. She grew up at Holly Cottage, Allerton and her father was a joiner. Mary died in Ladywell, Hackney aged 75 years old and was buried there.
Georgiana Hannah Millard (d 1860 – 17 November 1929)
Georgiana was born in Cambridge and lived with her father at Gwydir Street until his death in 1893. She then lived at 42 Gwydir Street with Ann Millard (possibly an aunt) and was described as a ‘step daughter’ (at least 1901-1924).
It is not thought that John and Mary Faiers were related to the Millard family and the connection between the two families is not known.
Mary Faiers (1790-1858)
Mary was married to John Fraiers and died at Grafton Street, City Road ‘after a few hours’ illness’. She was said to be ‘much respected and regretted by a large circle of acquaintances’.
John Faiers (1799 – 2 November 1872)
John was born in Hadleigh, Suffolk and was the son of William. He married Mary and they lived at 13 Maids’ Causeway where he was a boot maker, currier and leather cutter. The business also supplied other shoe/bootmakers within the town. However c.1852 John moved to The Suffolk Hotel. Grafton Street, where he also ran the Grafton Street Ale Brewery. The freehold of the Suffolk Hotel was sold in March 1869 and was said to consist of ‘that very substantially built brick and slate house, distinguished by its bold front elevation…together with the substantially built Brewery, and a compact 3-quarter plant therein, equal to new; stabling, shed, chambers and other conveniences; Pump of good water, and yard with gateway entrance’.
John served as a tax collector for the St. Andrew the Less parish (1841) and was also a constable for the same parish (1858). After Mary’s death he married Sarah Crane (1822-1894) on 1 June 1859 in Wood Ditton. In 1871 the couple were living at 39 Grafton Street and he was working as a coal agent. Cricketer George Harvey and his family had moved to live at the Suffolk Hotel. John applied for a place at the Royal Albert Almshouses on Hills Road. Places were offered on the result of a public vote, and he topped the vote held on 29 October 1872 with 366 votes, the second place applicant receiving 221 votes, and third 80 votes. Unfortunately he died at Grafton Street four days later, and never got to take up his place.
