William was born in Felsham in Suffolk. By 1851 he was married to Sarah and was living in Littleport and working as an agricultural labourer. In 1871 he was living at 64 Newmarket Road and working as an independent unlicensed brewer.
From at least 1879 he was running the Butchers Arms at 231 Newmarket Road. The census of 1881 records him there and as a ‘publican and lodging house keeper’. He died in 1883 aged 56 years old.

Sarah was born in Burwell. She and William did not have any children, and she was widowed in 1883 when she was 60 years old. She is recorded as being landlady of the Butchers Arms in 1888, but by 1891 was living next door to the pub, and living on her own means. She died aged 77 years old.
