Monument

This headstone stands against the west wall to the north of the north path in the parish of Andrew the Less. It is usually hidden by bramble and ivy. The carved inscription is above & below an incised cross. The lower half of the stone is badly eroded and very little of James’ inscription can be read now.

Elizabeth Freeman (née Stearn) (1789 – 23 June 1873)
Elizabeth was born in Teversham, a village three miles outside Cambridge and married James Freeman on 28 October 1818 at All Saints’ Church. The couple had at least four children: Edward (1819-), James (1823-), Harriet (1826-1909) and Elizabeth (1829-). James was a builder and the family lived at 32 Thompson’s Lane (1851), 2 Short Street (1861) and 6 James Street (at least 1871 onwards). Elizabeth died at home and her funeral was held on 28 June.
James Freeman (1797 – 21 February 1885)
James was the son of John and Jane Freeman, and was baptised at St. Clement’s Church on 6 August 1797. After he was widowed he continued to live at James Street with youngest daughter Elizabeth, who was a dressmaker. He died at home aged 88 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 26 February.
