David Gates (1850 – 5 July 1933)

David was the youngest son of Thomas and Martha (née Underwood) and grew up at 16 Broad Street (1851) and 11 Bradmore Street (1861).  His father was a ‘gaol turnkey’ who died in December 1855 and aged 21 David was working as a tailor with his brother William. He married Lydia Lloyd (1852-1943) in 1874 and they lived at 4 Albert Street (1881) and then Searle Street (1891).  David was a tailor, but by 1891 was described as a general shopkeeper.  He was admitted to Fulbourn Asylum on 7 October 1891 where he remained for the rest of his life. He died at the hospital aged 83 years old.

From parish burial records it is known that David’s widow Lydia was also buried in the Holy Trinity area of Mill Road Cemetery in 1943 and is believed to have been buried in the same grave.

Lydia Gates (née Lloyd) (10 August 1852 – September 1943)

Lydai was born in Trumpington, and was the daughter of agricultural labourer Robert and Mary Ann (née Shildrick). Mary Lloyd died in 1854 and she grew up on London Road with her father and sisters. In 1871 she was documented as being an out of work domestic servant, before marrying David Gates in 1874. Whilst David was in hospital she ran a Lodging House from 12 Alexandra Road (1901), 2 Trinity Lane (1911) and then 3 Norwich Street (1939). She lived with her niece Martha Gates and died at home aged 91 years old. She was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 27 September 1943.
