This headstone stands 2 rows east of the central path not far from the Gwydir Street gate. Many of the metal letters are missing but the inscription is still legible.

In Affectionate Memory of JANE the beloved wife of JOSEPH GILLINGS who died August 16th 1881 in the 36th year of her age

Jane Gillings (née Mountford) (1846 – 16 August 1881)

Jane was born in Linton, the daughter of John (1813-1889)and Sophia (née Morley) (1819-1896). Her father was a police constable and by 1851 they family had moved to 37 South Street, Cambridge. Jane worked as a dressmaker and married tailor Joseph Gillings in 1867. The couple had four children: Florence Ada Mountford (1868-1930), Percy Joseph (1871-1942), Kate Mountford Sophia (1873-1956) and Gertrude Emma (1878-1951). They lived at 12 St. John’s Street (1871) and 3 Kingston Terrace (1881). Jane died at home aged 35 years old and her funeral was held on 22 August.

Joseph Gillings married Lavinia Ward in 1884 and they had another five children.He worked as a master tailor and in 1911 was running a shop at 18 Mill Road.

Jane’s parents were also buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery, but their grave has not yet been identified.
