Inscription

As it is written in a Gothic style it is very hard to read and now partially covered by undergrowth.

John Harwood Goode (1809-1861)

John was born on 18th February 1809 in the parish of St Bene’t, Cambridge. A sister, Harriet was born on May 31 1811. The family lived at 72 Bridge Street, Cambridge,  in the parish of Holy Sepulchre. His parents William Goode and Caroline Harwood had married in the parish of Holy Sepulchre in May 1808.  A William Goode (John’s father?) died in 1831.

1841 census  John aged 30 in was living in Bridge Street with his mother Caroline aged 50 and both listed their occupation as ‘painter’. Also living with them was Ann Harwood, Caroline’s mother and three servants.

1851 census  John was still in Bridge Street. He had a live in cook and house maid. He was a painter who employed six men. His mother was with her married daughter Harriott Adams in Sidney Street. Harriott and her husband are also buried in the Cemetery.

1853 John Harwood Goode married Charlotte Kemp in Islington.

1861 census John aged 52 living with his wife Charlotte aged 34 from Abingdon (Abington), at a house on Midsummer Common.

1861 June 11th  John Harwood Goode died and was buried in Mill Road Cemetery on June 15th.

Clara Charlotte Kemp (1847-1868)

Clara was born to Isabel Kemp (single woman) of Sun Street, Cambridge. Clara was John’s niece.  It is thought that Isabel was Charlotte’s sister.  Three other sisters of Charlotte, Elizabeth Eve Kemp; Mary Ann Kemp and  Emily Looker with her husband Richard are buried in the grave next to this one. Clara died on 10 February 1868.  St Andrew the Great parish records show that Clara  ‘of London’  was only 20 when she died.
