John Henry Greenhill (1864 – 8 May 1922)

John was born in Kennington, and grew up in Tottenham. He was the son of John and Ellen Greenhill and his father was a bricklayer. John trained as a cook and by 1891 had moved to Cambridge, where he lodged with the Day family at 74 Norwich Street. He married Mary Ann Curteis on 10 November 1891 at St. John the Evangelist, Hornsey in London. The couple lived at 170 Gwydir Street and had three children: Edward John (1892-1958), Irene (1894-1985) and Grace Helen (1898-1978). In 1911 he was working as cook at a railway refreshment rooms and died at home aged 58 years old.

Mary Ann Greenhill (née Curteis) (2 August 1869 – 23 April 1959)

Mary was the youngest daughter of William Christopher Curteis (1830-1883) and Naomi (née Cleghorn) (1829-1911). Her father was a slatemason and she grew up at  Albert Street. After her father’s death in 1883 she lived with her widowed mother at 17 Petty Cury and worked as a dressmaker, prior to marrying John Greenhill. In 1939 she was living at 155 Gwydir Street with daughter Grace and son in law Sidney Pratt. Mary died in Cambridge a few months before her 90th birthday.

Edward John Greenhill (28 September 1892 – 27 January 1958)

Edward trained as an electrical engineer (1911), but by the time he enlisted in the Navy in November 1915 was working as an instrument maker.  From his navy record it is known he was 5ft 10.75″ tall, with light brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. He was discharged in May 1919, and his records were marked in June 1917 with the handwritten instruction ‘if this man dies, is discharged or reported missing R.N. College Dartmouth to be informed. List 5A’. In 1939 he was living in Dartmouth and working as a scientific instrument maker. He returned to Cambridge and lived at 170 Gwydir Street.  Edward died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital aged 65 years old and was buried with his parents.
