In Loving Memory of our dear mother BETSEY HILL
who died December 29th 1895 aged 78 years

EMMA SERJEANT HASLER daughter of the above
who died at Newport Essex June 12 1932 aged 73 years

Betsey Hill (née Wallis) (29 October 1817 – 29 December 1895)

Betsey was the daughter of Thomas and Emma (née Serjeant) Wallis. She was born in Haslingfield, six miles south west of Cambridge and baptised there on 2 June 1819. Thomas Wallis was a farmer and Betsey married  farmer Richard Hill on New Year’s Eve 1840 in Chesterton. Richard farmed 80 acres in Ickleton and they had at least eleven children: Mary (1841-1922), Emily Wallis (1843-1923), John (1844-1909), Martha Ann (1846-1929), Wallis Swan (1847-1847), Sabella (1848-1850), Henry Swan (1850-1927), Ellen (1852-1950), Elizabeth (Lizzie) (1856-), Alice Wallis (1857-1859) and Emma Serjeant (1859-1932). Betsey and Richard were living together in 1871, but in 1881 she was living in Saffron Walden with her son Henry and his family. Henry Hill was a pork butcher who ran a shop on Church Street. On the 1881 census  Betsey was marked as being married, but it is not known where Richard was at this time. In 1891 she was still living with her son Henry in Saffron Walden, but by this time was a widow.  Betsey Hill died at 36 Perowne Street, Cambridge – the home of her daughter Mary and son in law Sidney Tebbutt.  She was buried at Mill road Cemetery  on 3 January 1896.

Emma Serjeant Hasler (née Hill) (1859 – 12 June 1932)

Emma was the youngest daughter of Richard and Betsey Hill and was born in Ickleton. She worked as a milliner and in 1911 was living in Wood Green, London with fellow milliner Frances Leftley. She married widower William Andrew Hasler (1847-1923) on 27 January 1919 at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Newport, Essex. William was a retired blacksmith, whose wife Elizabeth had died in 1911. She was widowed four years later, and died in Newport aged 73 years old.
