Elizabeth Hawes (née Bush) (1852 – 29 April 1899)

Elizabeth was the fourth daughter of James and Sarah (née Chilvers) and grew up at 55 New Street. Her father was a bricklayer, her mother a laundress and both parents were originally from Norfolk before they had moved to Cambridge. She married tailor Henry Hawes on 18 July 1869 and they are thought to have had at least eleven children: Henry (known as Harry) (1870-), Leonard William (1871-1930), Annie Elizabeth (1873-1944), William (1875-1936), Walter Chilvas (1877-1953), Frederick James (1878-1979), Frederick James (1883-), Ralph (1886-1959), Jessie May (1890-1977), Doris Mabel (1893-1965) and Frances (1895-). The family lived at 4 Bradmore Street (1871), 25 Gold Street (1881), 130 Gwydir Street (1891) and Abbey Road. Elizabeth worked as a tailoress later in her marriage and died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital aged 46 years old.

Henry Hawes (c.1850 – 17 March 1911)

Henry was born in Wickham, near Ely and married Elizabeth when he was c.19 years old. After her death he married Thirza Dean (1862-1940)  in the summer of 1900, and they continued to live at 49 Abbey Road.  Thirza was a dressmaker, and they both worked from home. Henry died at home and his funeral was held on 21 March.
