Herbert William Hall (1887 – 9 November 1918)
Known as Bert, he was the eldest son of Thomas and Sarah Hall. He worked as a grocer’s warehouseman and did not marry, living at home with his parents and siblings. He was a teacher at the Grantchester Sunday school for many years. Bert died at home aged 31 years, 80 Ainsworth Street ‘after a short illness’ and his funeral was held at the Zion Baptist Chapel, before interment at Mill Road Cemetery.
Thomas William Hall (1858 – 26 January 1927)
Thomas was born in Fulbourn and baptised there on 7 May 1859. He was the eldest son of agricultural labourer Henry William Hall (1838-) and May (née Day) (1836-) and grew up in Fulbourn (1861) and then Burwell (1871). Aged 23 he was lodging in Fordham, near Newmarket and working as a railway engine cleaner. He married Sarah Chapman in 1883 and they had six children: Bert, George Frederick (1890-1963), Sidney Thomas (known as Sid) (1892-), Arthur Charles (1897-1971), Hilda May (known as May) (1903-1981) and one more child who died as an infant. Thomas later worked as a railway stoker then railway driver, and the family lived at 178 Sturton Street (at least 1891-1901), 80 Ainsworth Street (at least 1911-1920), 37 Abbey Walk (at least 1921 onwards). Thomas died at home and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 31 January.
Sarah Rebecca Hall (née Chapman) (20 September 1857 – 21 January 1946)
Sarah was born in Chesterton and baptised there on 11 October 1857. She was the daughter of Richard (1828-1899) and Sophia (née Moore) (1828-1915) and grew up on Victoria Road. Her father was an agricultural labourer and later an under gardener, her mother a laundress. Aged 23, just before her marriage Sarah was assisting her mother in the laundry business. After she was widowed she lived at 37 Abbey Walk with three of her children and died at home. The funeral service was held at the Zion Chapel on 24 January.
