Edwin John Hills (25 May 1843 – 4 June 1883)
Edwin was the second son of John and Sophia Hills. He was baptised at St Clement’s Church on 17th March 1854. Edwin was a joiner/ gilder and frame maker, and the family were raised at 3 Portugal Place and then 9 Wheeler Street.
Edwin married Eliza Stanford in 1869. In 1871 he was living with Eliza at 5 Union Street and was working as a carpenter and paper hanger, employing 4 men. In 1881 he was living at 9 Peas Hill and was a carpenter. He died in 1883 aged 40 years old at 1 Panton Street.
George Frederick Hills (c.1848 – 7 October 1911)
George was the fourth of John and Sophia Hill’s nine children. He grew up at 3 Portugal Place [1851] and then at 9 Wheeler Street [1861]. George never married and lived for the majority of his life at Wheeler Street. He worked initially as a paper hanger [at least 1871-1891]. On the census records of 1901 and 1911 he is recorded as a picture frame maker.
He lived at 9 [and later 9 & 10 Wheeler Street] with his sisters Ellen and Sophia and brother John. Ellen and Sophia ran a Lodging House there. George died in October 1911 aged 64 years old.
Benjamin Hills (1860 – 24 June 1890)
Benjamin was the youngest of the Hills children. He was born at 9 Wheeler Street. Aged 21 he was living in Birmingham and was a drapers assistant to his brother Henry George Hills. He died in Cambridge in 1890 aged 30 years old.
John Hills (1850 – 10 January 1912)
John was the fifth of the Hills children. He grew up at 9 Wheeler Street and worked as a picture frame maker and gilder. He never married, and lived with his sisters and brother Edwin at Wheeler Street. He died aged 61 years old.
