Eliza Hobbs (née Benton) (2 December 1869 – 16 September 1927)

Eliza was the daughter of Robert and Mary Ann and grew up on Coldham’s Lane (1871) and Snow’s Yard, Abbey Street (1881). Her Irish father worked as a  labourer and her mother was a charwoman/washerwoman. In 1891 Eliza was working as a laundress and married Daniel Hobbs (1867-1951) in 1892.  The couple had at least seven children: Alice Mercy (1893-1975), Annie Frances (1894-1894), Robert (1895-1988), Daniel (1898-1972), Annie Adelaide (1900-), Lily Matilda (1903-1913) and Harry. Daniel worked for Great Eastern Railway as a coppersmith’s assistant and Eliza was a college bedmaker. The family lived at 6 York Street (until at least 1911), 98 Norfolk Street (at least 1913-1923) and then 26 Ross Street (1924 onwards). Eliza died at home aged 57 years old.

Daniel Hobbs (Snr) continued to live at Ross Street with son Daniel, and both worked for G.E.R. He died at home in  January 1951 aged 83 years old.

Annie Frances Hobbs (September 1894 – November 1894)

Annie died at York Street aged 2 months old and her funeral was held on 24 November.

Harry Hobbs (1901 – 6 May 1902)

Harry was baptised on 18 September 1901 at St. Matthew’s Church and died aged 11 months old. He was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 24 May.

Lily Matilda Hobbs (1903 – March 1913)

Lily died at at Norfolk Street aged 9 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 29 March 1913.
