Jane Hopkins (née Sawyer) (1833 – 30 December 1907)
Jane was born in Sutton, six miles west of Ely, the daughter of John and Susan (née Poole). Aged 18 she was working as a servant in Chatteris (1851) and married Henry Hopkins on 22 July 1853 in Sutton. Henry was a shepherd and they had at least nine children and one adopted child: Henry William (1854-1935), John A(1857-), Alice (1860-1931), Arthur Herbert (1863-1944), Alfred (1865-1948), Burrows (1867-1954), Lydia (1870-1942), Frederick Charles (1872-1944), Daisy (1879-1957) and Herbert (adopted) (1888-1971). They lived in Sutton, and by 1881 Henry was landlord of the Black Horse, Hill Street, as well as working as a shepherd. By 1891 they had moved to live at 36 Gold Street, Cambridge. Her death registration gave her age as 75 years, the grave monument states 76 years.
Henry Hopkins (c.1829 – 14 July 1911)
Henry was also born in Sutton, the son of shepherd John Hopkins (1798-1881) and Alice (née Burrows) (1798-1877). After he was widowed he lived at Gold Street with son Herbert, daughter Daisy and her family.
