This headstone, in the parish area of St Paul, is located six rows east of the western path.  The inscription is now badly eroded.

died 1 July 1873 in the 40th year of his age

James Howe (1834 – 1 July 1873)

James was the son of Thomas and Harriet and was baptised on 14 September 1834 at St. Mary the Less Church. He grew up at 7 Doric Street where his father was a shoemaker (1851/1861). By the age of 17 James was working as a tailor. He married Frances Ricket in 1870 and in 1871 the couple were living at 40 Trumpington Street where he was documneted as a tailor and publican. He died aged 39 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 6 July 1873.

Frances Rachel Howe (née Ricket) (c.1829 – 11 July 1915)

Frances was born in Fen Ditton and was the daughter of James (1791-1842) and Elizabeth (née Sandfield) (1800-1874). In 1851 she was working as a housemaid at Petersfield House for Rev. Robert and Mary Ann Willis and in 1861 was living at Melbourn and working for John and Harriet Fordham. She married James Howe when she was c.42 years old and after his death continued to run the pub at 40 Trumpington Street until at least 1879. She then ran Lodging Houses at 11 Clarendon Street (1881) and 9 Tennis Court Road (at least 1891 onwards). She died at home and her funeral took place on 14 July.

Sarah Ann Ricket (1839 – 1 May 1922)

Sarah was Frances’ younger sister and  aged 31 was working as a parlourmaid in London (1871). She was working with Caroline Howe (1829-1915) who was the cook in the same household, sister of James Howe and the two women ran a Lodging House at 60 Regent Street (at least 1887-1891) and later at18 Guest Road (at least 1911 onwards). Sarah died at home and was buried on 3 May.
