Inscription

In Loving Memory of MARY ANN LOUISA HUGHES
d February 1956 aged 87 years

Mary Ann Louisa Hughes (née Thompson) (21 March 1868 – February 1956)

Mary was the daughter of bootmaker Alfred Barnard Thompson (1839-1927) and Mary Ann (née Sanderson) (1839-1893). She was baptised at All Saints’ Church on 3 May 1868 and grew up at 37 Adam and Eve Row (1871) and 169 Sturton Street (1881). In 1891 she was working as a nursemaid for Charles and Grace Swan, who ran the Barron of Beef pub on Bridge Street. She then lived with her widowed father at 18 St. Matthew’s Street and worked as a tailoress (1901). Mary married Thomas Edward Hughes in 1915, and they lived with her father at 18 St. Matthew’s Street, but it is thought she was widowed by at least 1920. In 1939 Mary was working as a school caretaker and was living by herself at St. Matthew’s Street, next door to her brother Charles Barnard Thomspon (1874-1941). She died in Cambridge aged 87 years old.
