Inscription

Frederick Johnson (c.1824 – 12 April 1895)

Frederick was born in Cambridge and worked as a tailor. He married dressmaker Sarah in 1847 and the couple started married life at 46 Gloucester Street (1851).  They had at leaset seven children: Ellen (1853-), Anne (1855-), Elizabeth (1858-), Alice Sarah (1868-), Mary Louisa (1871-), Henry (1874-) and Leonard Frederick (1875-1903). They later lived at Castle Street (1861), 4 Brewhouse Buildings, Bradmore Street (1871), 70 Russell Street (1881) and 13 Fair Street (1891).

In November 1868 shoemaker Henry Hammond ‘a man about 50 or 60 years of age’ was charged with ‘grossly indecent conduct’ towards Frederick’s eleven year old daughter Elizabeth.  The girl was described in court as an ‘intelligent looking though small girl’ and she had been observed with Hammond. She said he had given her half a penny and asked to meet her later. Hammond told the court it was all a conspiracy against him, but he was nevertheless found guilty. The court imposed its most severe punishment – six months in prison with hard labour and ‘expressed their regret that such a monster existed in the borough. The crowd in court cheered this sentiment and groaned the prisoner as he was being removed’.

Frederick Johnson died at 5 Garden Cottage, Willow Place and his funeral was held on 17 April 1895.

From parish burial records it is known that Frederick’s son Leonard was also buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery and may be therefore buried in the same grave.

Leonard Frederick Johnson (1876 – 28 June 1903)

Leonard was the youngest child of Frederick and Sarah Johnson and worked as a tailor’s apprentice aged 15. In 1901 he was living with his sister Alice at 5 Garden Cottages and was not noted as having any occupation. He died at home aged 27 years old and his funeral was held on 2 July.
