Frederick William Joachim Ladds (23 August 1888 – 20 November 1953)

Frederick was the son of William and Mary Ann Ladds.  He grew up at Barrie Villas, 28 Abbey Road and his father worked as a house painter. In 1911 he was still living at home and working as a brewer’s engineer.  He married Clara Gill later the same year and the couple had at least four children: Leslie Frank (1922-2018), Dennis Frederick (1913-1944), Jack Henry (1915-2011) and Ronald Arthur (1921-).  The family lived at 62 Coleridge Road, and in 1939 Frederick was working as motor boat builder.  He died at home in 1953 and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 23 November.

Clara Ann Ladds (née Gill) (19 December 1884 – 11 February 1962)

Clara was the daughter of Arthur and Caroline Gill, and grew up on Madras Street. Her father was a telegraph labourer, and later worked as a greengrocer. In 1911 she was living at Brooklyn, 70 Regent Street and was the cook in Mary Phyper’s lodging house.  She married Frederick Ladds when she was 26 years old. She died aged 77 years old at Coleridge Road.

Mary Ann Ladds (née Woods) (1853 – 26 December 1926)

Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (née Hinson) Woods and was Frederick’s mother.  Her father was a confectioner/baker and later ran a mineral water business.   She grew up at 128 Fitzroy Street and aged 17 (1871) was working as a straw bonnet maker. Mary married Richard Penn Hinson (1854-) in 1874 and they had one son: Thomas Percy (1875-1926).  Richard was probably a relative on her maternal side, and it is not known what happened to the marriage as no death record for Richard Hinson has been found.  She married for a second time to William Edward Ladds (1865-1914) in 1888 and they had two children: Frederick William Joachim (1888-1953) and Harry (1890-). At first the couple lived with her parents at Barrie Villas, Abbey Road (1891) and later at 59 Abbey Road (1911). William died in July 1914, and Mary continued to live at Abbey Road. She died at home aged c.70 years old.
