Elizabeth Lewis (née Armstead) (1830 – 7 April 1915)

Elizabeth was the daughter of gunsmith Thomas Armstead and Elizabeth. She grew up at 18 New Street and aged 20 was living at 41 New Square where she was a general servant to Mary Rooke and her daughter Kezia. She married widower William Hutley Lewis (1810-1874) on 19 September 1858 and they had  eight children: Charles Thomas (1859-), Elizabeth Harriet (1860-1924), Frances (1863-1948), William Hutley (1864-1940), Eliza (1866-1943), Mary Ann (1871-1951), Sarah Ann (1873-) and one more child who died as an infant. William worked as a mechanic/capenter, Elizabeth as a charwoman/college bedmaker and the family lived at 10 Trinity Place (1861/1871).   William Lewis died in London in 1874, and might have been hospitalised before his death.  In 1881 Elizabeth was living at 32 Burleigh Street with five of her children, and in 1891 was at 14 Willow Place with youngest daughter Sarah. She had retired by 1901 but continued to live at Willow Place with daughter Sarah. She died at 8 Maid’s Causeway aged 84 years old.
