Ellen Frances Moden (29 September 1867 – 25 February 1942)
Ellen was the daughter of Robert and Emma (née Reynolds) Moden and was born in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire. Her father was a baker and she grew up at 16 & 17 City Road (1871/1881) and 19 Mill Road (1891). Ellen worked as a dressmaker but by 1901 had moved to Angel Lane, West Ham where she was a bakery shop assistant. In 1911 she had returned to Cambridge and was working as a cook for Arthur and Alice Chaplin who lived at Chaucer Road. In 1921 she was living with her mother Emma and working as a bedmaker’s help at Trinity College.
She later lived at Caxton End, Bourn (1932) and then moved to 22 Royal Albert Almshouses, Hills Road. In 1939 Ellen was documented as a retired domestic servant and died at Mill Road Infirmary ‘after much suffering patiently borne’ aged 74 years old.
