Henry Pettit (11 September 1836 – 2 January  1907)

Henry was the son of Thomas and Martha Pettit and was baptised in Cambridge on 16 October 1836. His father was a cordwainer (shoemaker) and he grew up on King Street. Henry worked as a printer from at least the age of 14 onwards and the Pettit family had moved to live at 1 Belmont Place by 1861. Henry maried Martha Williams in 1863 and they had nine children: Martha Jane (1867-1951), Annie Elizabeth (1867-1938), Harry Edward (1869-1870), Hannah (1871-1966), Alice (1873-1904), Florence Louisa (1876-), Rose Amelia (1879-), Mabel Maud Miriam (1884-1884) and one further child who died as an infant. The family lived at 79 Fitzroy Street (1871) and 11 Mill Street (at least 1881 onwards). Henry died at home and his funeral took place on 7 January.

Martha Pettit (née Williams) (1841 – 23 February 1931)

Martha was born in St. Ives, near Huntingdon the daughter of tailor John Williams and Jane.  In 1851 the family were living at Northampton Street, Cambridge and she married Henry Pettit when she was twenty two years old.  After she was widowed she lived with daughter Hannah and son in law John Young in Bourn (1911) and died in Romford, Essex.

Harry Edward Pettit (October 1869  – August 1870)

Harry died at Fitzroy Street aged 10 months old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 1 September 1870.

Mabel Maud Miriam Pettit (May 1884 – September 1884)

Mabel died at Mill Street aged 4 months old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 18 September 1884.

Alice Langford (née Pettit) (1873 – 4 August  1904)

Alice grew up at Mill Street and worked as a dressmaker. She married Walter Sidney Langford (1874 -1954) in 1894 and they had two sons: Reginald Spencer Sidney (1895-1967) and Cecil Courtney (1897-1968). Walter worked for ‘Pearl Life’ as an insurance superintendant and the family moved often with his work.  Their son Reginald was born in Kettering and second son Cecil was born in Colchester. In 1901 they were still living in Colchester, and Alice died in Lincolnshire. The parish burial records do not record Alice as being buried at Mill Road Cemetery, so it is thought she was buried in Lincolnshire and remembered on the family grave.

Walter Langford married for a second in June 1905 to Lilian Adelaide Archdale (1886-). They had at least five children together and Walter died in Cambridge in 1954.
