James Wallder (c.1853 – 12 June 1897)
Very little is known of James’ life. He married Rebecca Pate in Ipswich in 1889. They had one daughter: Mary Elizabeth Scholastica (1890-1980) who was born in Melbourne, Australia in February 1890, so it can be assumed that the family must have lived there at some point. There may be some evidence that he was a ‘navvie’/sailor as a James Walder (sic) made various sailings between England and Australia from 1873 onwards.
James died at 63 Ainsworth Street in Cambridge aged 44 years old.
Joan Gwendoline Lunniss (July 1920 – 31 July 1920)
Joan was the daughter of Mary Lunniss (née Wallder) and her husband Aubrey (1890-1954) and was the granddaughter of James and Rebecca Wallder.
Mary Elizabeth Scholastica Wallder married furniture salesman Aubrey Lunniss in 1915 and they went on to have at least four children: Reginald Wilfred (1916-2006), Joan Gwendoline, Joyce Margaret (1922-1999) and Richard James (1924-1999). In 1939 the family were living at 39 Gilbert Road, and Aubrey had started his own furniture business.
Joan Lunniss was their second child, and died as an infant.
Rebecca Mary Ellen Wallder (née Pate) ( 18 June 1854 – 23 May 1941)
Rebecca was the daughter of Gibbs and Ellen (née Smith) and was baptised on 4 January 1857. Her father was a grocery assistant and she grew up at 4 Pikes Walk (1861). By the age of 16 she was working as a dressmaker, and living at 12 Union Road with her parents and siblings. She married in 1889, and was widowed aged 42 years old. She moved back to live with her parents and daughter at 31 Kingston Street, and worked as a dressmaker. She would appear to have run a dressmaking business, and advertised for workers in the Cambridge newspapers of the time. She lived at 31 Kingston Street until at least 1911, then at 10 Emery Street (1920). She then moved to live with her daughter Mary, son-in-law Aubrey and grandchildren at 53 Gilbert Road (1939). She died at Gilbert Road in May 1941 aged 86 years old.
