John Mansfield (14 January 1821 – 22 November 1887)
John was born in Cambridge, the son of John (1800-1883) and Ann (née Arber) (1802-1861). He grew up at New Street, and his father worked as a butcher. John (jnr) was also a butcher and he married Mary Spooner on 26 September 1842 at St. Andrew the Less Church. The couple had at least ten children: Harriet Mary Ann (1844-1925), Alice Mary Ann (1846-1933), Mary Ann (1848-1850), Susan (1850-1899), Ann (1852-), Emma (1854-1945), John (1857-1937), Mary Ann (1859-), Jane (1861-1946) and Elizabeth (1863-1947). They lived at 27 Occuation Road, and he continued to work as a butcher, as did his son John. He died at home aged 66 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 28 November.
John’s sister Susan Watts (née Mansfield) (1830-1861) died at Newmarket Road and was buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery on 15 July 1861. His father John Mansfield died at Newmarket Road and was buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of the Cemetery on 4 September. His mother Ann died at Newmarket Road and was buried on 15 July 1860. Neither grave has yet been identified.
John and Mary’s daughter Susan Westwood (née Mansfield) died at 78 New Street on 20 May and was buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery on 24 May. Her grave has not yet been identified.
Mary Ann Mansfield (née Spooner)(1823 – 9 July 1898)
Mary was born in the village of Groton in Suffolk, a village between Sudbury and Hadleigh and married John Mansfield when she was 19 years old. Mary worked as a midwife from c.1860 onwards. After John’s death she lived at 84 New Street with her daughter Elizabeth (1891). She died at 4 Abbey Walk and her funeral was held on 14 July.
Emma Mansfield (7 February 1854 – 10 March 1945)
Emma worked as a servant through her life and did not marry. In 1871 she was working for rag and bone merchant Joseph Careless and living on Histon Road. By 1881 she was living in Richmond and working as a cook for brewer Rolston Piper and his family. She later worked as a monthly/maternity nurse and lived at 151 York Street (1901) and 63 Norfolk Terrace (1939). She nursed Louisa Farrant Edwards, who left a small sum in her will to her ‘friend and nurse’. Emma died at home aged 91 years old.
