James Albert Mason (1846 – 24 April 1924)

James was the son of William and Martha and was born in Fulbourn, but grew up at Coronation Street (1851) and Downing Place (1861/1871). His father was a cordwainer/shoemaker and James worked as the same. He married Eleanor Whitehead in 1878 and they had two children: Samuel Albert (known as Sam) (1879-1962) and Eleanor Maud (known as Nell) (1884-1970). The family lived at 11 Burleigh Street (1881) and 40 Abbey Road (a least 1891 onwards). James worked from home as a bootmaker for Messrs’ Flack and Sons of Bridge Street for 45 years, and retired in c.1922. James died ‘after a short illness borne with great fortitude’ at Abbey Road aged 77 years old. Obituaries noted that ‘he was a member of the Good Samaritan Lodge and an energetic member of the Committee of the Management of the Co-operative Society’ and that he ‘was well known and greatly respected by all who came in contact with him’.

Eleanor Mason (née Whitehead) (15 November 1853 – 27 December 1945)

Prior to marrying James, Eleanor was working as a domestic servant and lodging with her aunt and uncle at Gwydir Street. After she was widowed she went to live with daughter Nell, and son in law James Clark at 64 Panton Street (at least 1939 onwards). Eleanor died at the County Hospital, Mill Road aged 92 years old and her funeral was held at the Mill road Cemetery Chapel on New Years Eve 1945.  Newspapers commented that she ‘was probably the oldest member of the Cambridge co-operative society, being the widow of a former member of the Board of Management’.
