Henry Mason (c.1785 – 19 February 1852)
Henry was born in Teversham, a village three miles outside Cambridge and married Elizabeth Gage (1792-1832). The couple had at least four children: Mary (1815-1845), Rebecca (1822-1902), Ebenezer (1824-1846) and Elijah (1826-1826). It is thought he was widowed in April 1832 and then married Elizabeth Buttress on 1 January 1833 in Barnwell. They had at least one daughter: Alice (1840-) and possibly a son Robert (c.1839-).
Henry was landlord of the Blackbirds, 19 East Road, for many years. He renewed his lease in 1845, on a rent of £26 per annum. From sale particulars in 1847 it is known that the property was near Parker’s Piece and consisted of ‘a substantial brick and slate house, with tap room in front, bar-parlour behind, large club-room, three bedrooms, cellarage for nearly two hundred barrels, yard, brewhouse, wash-house, pump etc’. He was still running the pub in 1850, when it went to auction once more, but had retired by 1851 to live at City Road, where he was documented as being a gentleman.
Henry died suddenly and an inquest was held into his death. A post-mortem was performed by surgeon Mr. Carter, who ‘deposed that the cause of death was disease of the heart. Verdict, natural death’ and his funeral was held four days later.
His first wife Elizabeth, and children Mary, Ebenezer and Elijah were all buried at St. Andrew the Less churchyard.
