William Moody (2 November 1809 – 16 October 1895)

William was born in Newarket, and is believed to have been the illegitimate son of Thomas Moody (1781-1865) and Harriett Hassall (1783-1851).  He was known as William Moody Hassall, for the majority of his life, but over time changed his name to William Moody.  He married Elizabeth Rayner on 29 April 1835 in Newmarket  and the couple ran The Wheatsheaf Inn, Exning, near Newmarket (at least 1841 – 1861). Their niece Robinette Moody (1839-1927) lived with them from at least 1861 onwards. By 1871 the three had moved to live at 6 Petersfield, and William was described as a retired farmer on the census of that year. They later moved to 162 Gwydir Street (1881) and 51 Tenison Road (1891). William died at 211 Mill Road  and his funeral was held on 21 October.

Elizabeth Moody (née Rayner) (14 December 1811 – 22 August 1895)

Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (née Cobbold) and was also born in Newmarket.  She was baptised at St. Mary’s Church on 15 January 1812 and married William when she was 23 years old.  Elizabeth died at 211 Mill Road and was buried on 26 August.
