Harold was born in Bulmer, a village four miles south of Sudbury and was baptised at St. Andrew’s church, Bulmer on 22 May 1892. He was the son of Walter and Martha (née Amos) and his father was a police sergeant. Aged 20 he was living in Braintree with his widowed mother and working as a butchers’s assistant.  Harold is believed to have served as a gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery in the 1st World War. He maried Ethel Maud Sayer (1889-) on 29 May 1917 at St Columba’s Church, Cambridge and they had at least one child: Margaret (1921-). They lived at 39-40 Newnham Road before moving to run the Highworth Stores, 113 Milton Road around 1928. Harold died at Milton Road aged 40 years old.  Ethel continued to run Highworth Stores and was living there in 1939 with her father and daughter.
