Charles Newman (1849 – 9 May 1923)
Charles was born in Fen Ditton, the eldest son of agricultural labourer William Newman and his wife Susan (née Gotobed). He grew up on Church Street in the village and aged 12 was working as a ‘pot boy’ at a pub in Waterbeach, which was owned by his uncle William Gotobed. He married Ann Todd on 11 December 1870 in Fen Ditton and they had at least twelve children: William Todd (possibly Ann’s illigitimate son) (1870-), Walter (1874-1945), James Miller (known as Jim)(1875-1940), David (1878-), Jemima (1879-), Keziah (known as Ethel) (1881-), Asa (1883-1957), Kerenhappuch (1885-1968), Elizabeth (1888-913), Hannah (1889-1950), Joseph (1891-1970) and Alice Maud (1893-). Charles was a labourer and they started married life in Fen Ditton, but had moved to Park Terrace, East Road by 1888 when daughter Elizabeth was born. Charles was documented as a smith’s labourer (1891), a general labourer (1901) and a bricklayer’s labourer (1911). The family later lived at Sturton Street (at least 1901 -1911) and 17 John Street. Charles died at home aged 74 years old.
Ann Newman (née Todd) (1852 – 19 August 1931)
Ann was also born in Fen Ditton and was the daughter of John and Martha Todd. Her father was an agricultural labourer and the family lived at Green End in Fen Ditton. Ann also died at John Street and her funeral was held on 24 August.
