Hannah Newton (née Robinson) (1808 – 5 September 1880)
Hannah was born in Clare, Suffolk and baptised there on 25 March 1810. She was one of five children born to farm labourer Rinaldo Robinson (1866-1848) and Philadelphia (née Brown) (1773-1841). She married Thomas Newton in Suffolk on 1 April 1830. Thomas worked as a coachman in a private household and they lived at Gold Street (until at least 1871). The couple had at least twelve children: Hannah (1830-1896), Elizabeth (1832-), Sarah (1834-1952), Dorothy (1837-1926), Mary (1838-1840), Eliza (1840-1927), James (1842-1923), Thomas (1843-1927), Mary (1845-), William (1847-), George (1849-1850) and Rachel (1851-1908). Hannah died at Ainsworth Street and her funeral was held on 7 September 1880.
Thomas Newton (c.1801 – 20 March 1889)
Thomas was born in the village of Osbournby, to the south of Sleaford in Lincolnshire, the son of Thomas and Ann. In 1881 he was living at 88 Ainsworth Street with youngest daughter Rachel, and was documented as being a gentleman’s servant. He died at Ainsworth Street and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 26 March.
Thomas and Hannah’s daughter Hannah and her husband James Drake (1834-1874) are also buried in the St Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery, but their grave has not yet been identified.
Their three children who died in childhood were buried in St. Andrew the Less churchyard: Sarah (1834-1852), Mary (1838-1840) and George (1849-1850). All three children died at Gold Street.
Sarah Elizabeth Robinson (1874 – 29 October 1927)
Sarah is thought to have been the daughter of Elizabeth Newton. She was born in Kentish Town, London and by 1891 was living with her widowed mother at 9 Vicar’s Buildings, Cambridge. Elizabeth was working as a ladie’s sick nurse and Sarah as a dressmaker. The pair later lived at 6 Blinco Grove (1901) and 4 Homerton Street, off HIlls Road (1911). She died in Cambridge aged 53 years old.
