The monument in September 2025.

This broken headstone is located 3 rows west of the central path roughly in line with the gate to Gwydir St. It is hidden under trees and ivy and what is left of the carved inscription is badly eroded. We were unable to uncover the top half of the stone.

Robert Nichols (1856 – 7 December 1895)

Robert was born in Cambridge and was baptised on 5 October 1856.  He was the son of  Robert and Caroline (née Robinson) Nichols and grew up at 30 King Street, where his father was a butcher.  Robert married Mary Diver in 1878 and they had four children: Robert (1880-1961), Ethel Mary (1882-1964), Mildred (1885-1955) and Gladys (1891-1895). He worked as a railway porter and the family lived at the Railway Cottages, Longstanton (1881) and Stapleford (1891) before moving to Cambridge. Robert died at 34 Paradise Street aged 39 years old and his funeral was held on 11 December.

Gladys Nichols (1891 – 21 December 1895)

Gladys died a few weeks after her father aged 4 years old. Her funeral was held on Boxing Day 1895.

It is believed that Mary Nichols, wife of Robert is also buried in the same grave.

Mary Nichols (née Diver) (1853 – 11 October 1932)

Mary was born in the village of Isleham, eight miles north of Newmarket and was the daughter of Johnson and Rebecca Diver. Her father was a labourer and aged 14 Mary was working in Isleham as a domestic servant for widow Mary Sindall and her daughter Elizabeth. After she was widowed she worked as a college bedmaker and lived at 34 Paradise Street (1901) before moving to live with daughter Ethel and son in law Percy Baldrey at 5 St. John’s Road (1911).  She died at the Evelyn Nursing Home, Trumpington Road aged 79 years old.
