Monument

This kerb set, located in the parish of Andrew the Great, is right next to the path that runs round the centre circle just before it turns into the north path. One corner post is dislodged and the inscription now quite hard to read.

Annie Rebecca Payne (née Crees) (24 February 1871 – 1 November 1947)

Annie was born in Plymouth , the eldest daughter of John and Annie (née Lavers) Crees or Creese. Her father was a wheelright and she grew up in Ermington. Aged 20 she was working as a general servant for Thomas and Sarah Ainsworth near Tavistock and married Harry Payne in Devon in the summer of 1897. Harry was a picture frame maker and the couple lived at 36a Regent Street (1901), 26 Hills Road (1911) and Guest Road (1939). By 1939 Harry was documented as being a newsagent, and is thought to have been involved in his family business at 2 Emmanuel Street. Annie died at Union Lane Hospital.

John Henry (Harry) Payne (8 August 1871 – 1 May 1942)

Harry was the eldest son of Henry Charles Payne (1843-1921) and Jane (née Deeks) (1851-1923) and grew up at 2 Emmanuel Street, where his father had a picture framing/stationery shop. He died at his home 9 Guest Road and his funeral was held at the Mill Road Cemetery Chapel. The National Federation of Retail Newsagents were represented at the funeral.
