Henry Charles Payne (1843 – 19 July 1921)
Henry was the son of John and Martha and was born in London. He grew up at 22 York Street, where his father ran an ‘eating house’ (1851). John Payne died when Henry was a child, and his mother moved back to her native Ipswich where she married cordwainer and publican Joseph Cook. Aged 18, Henry was working as a basket maker and living at the Bricklayer’s Arms, Foxhall Road in Ipswich, which his mother and stepfather ran. He married Jane Deeks in Mildenhall in 1871 and the couple had twelve chidren: John Henry (1871-1942), Martha Elizabeth (1873-1928), Ada Beatrice (1875-1955), Janetta Eliza (1876-1980), Arthur Sidney (1878-), Katherine Maud (1879-1966), Annie Louisa (1880-), Jessica Laura (1882-1946), Ethel Clara (1884-1960), Montague Archibald (1891-1915), and two children who died as infants. They lived at 2 Emmanuel Road (at least 1881 onwards) where Henry ran a stationery and picture framing shop, and sold daily newspapers. He died at home aged 78 years old.
Jane Payne (née Deeks) (1851 – 11 April 1923)
Jane was born in Bury St. Edmunds, the daughter of John (1819-1894) and Susan (née Tooter) (1816-1892) Deeks. Her father was a marine store dealer (a licensed broker who bought and sold cordage, rags, timber, metal and other general waste products) and she grew up in Mildenhall. Jane died in Cambridge, two years after she was widowed.
The business at Emmanuel Street was later run by daughters Jessica and Katherine (until at least 1939).
Montague Archibald Payne (1891 – 14 November 1915)
Montague died at 2 Emmanuel Road aged 23 years old.
Martha Elizabeth Payne (1873 – 3 November 1928)
Aged 18, Martha was working as an assistant in her father’s picture framing shop. She died at 2 Emmanuel Street aged 55 years old.
