Mary Ann Peeps (née Copling) (1831 – 2 May 1907)
Mary was the daughter of Robert and Mary and was born in North Elmham, five miles north of East Dereham , Norfolk. Aged 20 Mary was working as a general servant for John and Fanny Thew in King’s Lynn (1851) and then lived with her sister Susan Copling on the High Street in King’s Lynn (1861). She married Robert Thomas Peeps (1831-1881) on 22 March 1866 at St. Margaret’s Church, King’s Lynn and they had at least four children: Gertrude Mary (1867-1918), Francis Robert George (1869-1921), Mary Jane (1870-1874) and Mary Jane (1875-1934). Robert was a cooper/publican and the couple ran the Bowling Green pub on Checker Street, King’s Lynn. Robert died in June 1881 aged 49 years old and Mary took over the running of the pub until May 1897 when the license passed to James Thompson. Mary and her daughter Mary Jane then moved to Cambridge to live with her other daughter Gertrude and son in law Harry Case at 25 Park Parade (1901).
Mary Jane (Jane) Pepys (1874 – 24 August 1934)
Jane was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Kings Lynn on 27 September 1874. She lived with her mother at the Bowling Green and then moved to Park Parade to live with her sister and brother in law. After Gertrude’s death in 1918, Jane lived with her brother in law Harry and niece Doris at Park Parade. She is believed to have died in Somerset aged 60 years old.
Jane is not believed to have married, and it is not known why she changed the spelling of her surname from Peeps to Pepys.
