Inscription

In Memory of SARAH wife of WILLIAM PICKERING d Jan 20 1884 aged 82

Sarah Pickering (née Cater) (1801 – 20 January 1884)

Sarah was born in Watton-at Stone, Hertfordshire, a village between Stevenage and Hertfordshire and was the daughter of farmer William and Sarah (née Mickley). She was baptised on 4 January 1802 and married farmer William Pickering (1800-1872) on 11 December 1827 at Holy Trinity Church, Bengeo, Hertford. In 1832 William was farming in Riseley, Bedfordshire, renting from the Right Honourable St. John and paying a yearly rent of £12, 11s and 10d.   The couple had at least four children: Frederick (1828-), Sarah (1830-), William John (1831-1892) and Mary (1834-1913). The children were all born in Riseley, but by 1841 William was farming in Beaumont Chase, near Uppingham, Rutland. The farm was 335 acres, and William employed 11 agricultural labourers and four house servants (1851/1861).  By  1871 William was the farm bailiff of Howells Farm, Weston, Hertfordshire where he was responsible for 280 acres.

Sarah was widowed in December 1872 and then went to live with her son William in Bedford. William (jnr) was an agent for manure/fertilisers and was married with three children.  Sarah died at Warkworth Street, Cambridge and her funeral was held on 24 January. Sarah’s younger brother Thomas Cater (1811-) lived in Cambridge, which is what perhaps brought her to the town.
