Richard Prime (1856 – 24 October 1924)

Richard was the son of William and Hannah Prime and was born in Newnham.  His father was a carter/labourer and he grew up at Foster’s Yard,Mill Lane. Aged 15 he was working as a miller and living with his parents and brother James. He married Mary Williams in 1878 and they had three children: Edward Richard (1879-1881), Edith May (1881-1886) and Horace (1883-1939). Thoughout his married life Richard worked as a mustard maker in a mustard factory  and Mary as a housekeeper. The family lived at 15 Ferry Path (1881),  Mackintosh’s Yard, 14 Market Hill (1891), 33 Bridge Street (1901) and 73 Alpha Road (1911).  Richard died at home aged 68 years old.

Mary Ann Prime (née Williams)  (18 December 1852 – 1 February 1915)

Mary was born and raised in Swavesey, and was the daughter of Edward and Lucy Williams. She grew up on the High Street, where her father was a shoemaker. Mary died at Alpha Road aged 62 years old.

Edith May Prime (1881 – 30 November 1886)

Edith died at City Road and was buried on 6 December 1886

Edward Richard Prime (1879 – 28 June 1881)

Edward was the eldest son of Richard and Mary and died aged 2 years old.

Richard and Mary’s other son Horace, worked for Robert Sayle & Co for over 35 years until his sudden death in June 1939. He was head of the furnishings department and had been visiting Peterhouse College in connection  with his job when he collapsed and died. He was said to have been ‘one of the most popular of the staff’ and the General Manager of Robert Sayle’s described him as a ‘jolly and jovial man, always in excellent spirits and his death has come as a terrible shock’. Horace left a widow, Grace and two children.
