Samuel was the son of William and Sarah (née Young) and grew up on the High Street in Rampton where his father farmed 15 acres. In 1881 he was living at the Fountain Inn, Chesterton and was an apprentice baker to  James Rose who was a baker and also ran the inn. He married Charlotte Bridgeman on 15 February 1876 at St. Andrew’s Church, Soham and they had thirteen children: William James Bridgeman (1876-1882), George Charles (1878-), Ernest Samuel (1879-1879), Ethel Maud (1880-1966), Ernest Samuel (1882-1958), Florence Beatrice (1883-1966), Agnes Gertrude (1885-1926), Annie Bertha (1888-1966), Lilian Bridgeman (1889-1978), Alice May (1891-1977), Arthur James (1892-1979), Grace Charlotte (1894-1977) and Edith Helena (1896-).  The family lived at 85 York Street (1881) and then 14 Norfolk Terrace (at least 1891 onwards) and Samuel worked from home baking bread.
