Francis Rayner (1858 – 19 July 1923)

Francis was born in Arrington, and baptised there on 4 July 1858. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (née Rayner)  and grew up in Arrington where his father was a shepherd. Aged 22 Francis was working as a grocer, and living in Harlton with his brother Joseph, who ran The Hare and Hounds pub in the village. He married Mary Thurlbourn in 1890 and they had three children: Annie (1891-1964), Jessie Mary (1893-1968) and one more child who died as an infant. They started married life in Harlton, and Francis worked as a carrier (postman), but had moved to Cambridge by the time daughter Jessie was born in 1893. In 1901/1911 they were living at 83 Hemingford Road, and Francis worked as a commission agent for the Prudential. He was still working for the ‘Pru’ in 1916, and died aged 65 years old.

Mary Ann Rayner (née Thurlbourn) (9 February 1862 – 3 May 1953)

Mary was born in Harston and is believed to have been the daughter of groom Matthew (1831-1899) and Mary (1837-) Thurlbourn. After Francis’ death she lived at 36 Rock Road, with daughter Jessie and son in law George Clayton.
