James Rolfe (1858 – 28 December 1933)
James was the son of James and Eliza and grew up at 14 New Square. His father was a hawker and his younger sister Emma was murdered in 1876 on Midsummer Common. He married Susan Hutton in 1880 and the couple had eleven children: Arthur (1881-1953), Emma Harriett (1882-1964), Walter George (1884-1919), Elizabeth (1886-1954), James (1887-1950), Caroline (Carrie) (1889-1983), Charles (1891-1958), George (1892-1930), Louisa (1894-1918), Dorothy May (1895-1976) and Victoria Alice (1897-1957).
James worked as a fishmonger and traded from 8-10 St. Matthew’s Street. He died at 4 St. Matthew’s Street in 1933. His son Charles later ran a cycle shop from 8 St. Matthew’s Street.
Susan Rolfe (née Hutton) (1858 – 14 December 1938)
Susan was the daughter of George and Hannah and grew up at Gas Lane (1861) and then St. Matthew’s Court (1871). Her father was a labourer and she married James Rolfe aged c.22 years old. Susan died at 4 St. Matthew’s Street in 1938.
James and Susan’s daughter-in-law and granddaughter are buried in the St. Clement’s area of the Cemetery. Their grave has not yet been found
Florence Alice Rolfe (née Hames) (1887 – 19 May 1946)
Florence was the daughter of William (1848-1894) and Sophia (née Grey) (1853-1928) and was baptised at St. Matthew’s Church on 26 October 1887. She grew up at 12 New Street, and her father was a chimney sweep. She married James Rolfe, son of James and Susan on 9 March 1907 at St, Matthew’s Church and they had at least four children: Leonard James (1908-1981), Irene Gladys (1911-1935), Peggy Primrose (1915-2005) and Florence Ella (1920-1989). James worked as a plasterer for a building company and they lived at 67 East Road (1911) and then 83 East Road (1921) where James also ran a pub/boarding house called The Horse and Jockey along side his work as a plasterer. Florence died at 38 Staffordshire Street aged 58 years old and was buried on 23 May 1946.
Irene Gladys Rolfe (1911- 22 July 1935)
Irene was baptised on 22 February 1911 at St. Matthew’s Church. She was living at the Horse and Jockey in 1934 and died She died at 39 Warden Road, St Pancras aged 24 years old and was buried in Mill Road Cemetery four days later.
