He was born in Walkern, two miles outside Stevenage and his father worked as a brewer’s traveller (sales representative) (1901) before the family moved to  live in Hitchin where George Sarll ran a beer/tabacco shop (1911). After his father’s death in 1919 William moved to live at 1 Malcolm Street, Cambridge where his mother ran a Lodging House (at least 1923 onwards) and married Kathleen Isabel Saggers (1901-1988) in 1926.  William and Kathleen had two children: Donald W (1927-) and Eileen I (1928-) and the family lived at 77 Coleridge Road.
