At Rest
Lavinia Fanny Sayer (née Harlow) (1861 – 23 May 1925)
Lavinia was born in Bishopsbourne in Kent – a village six miles south east of Canterbury. Her parents were Thomas and Eliza Harlow, and Thomas Harlow was an agricultural labourer. By the age of 23, Lavinia was still living at home and working as a dressmaker. She married Edward Sayer on 18 December 1881 at St. Mary’s Church in Bishopsbourne. The couple had five children: Lavinia Kizzie (1882-1964), Maud Ellen (1883-1945), Edward Fred (1894-1967), Edward Frank (1896-1975) and one further child who died as an infant.
Both daughters were born in Kent, but by 1891 they had moved to Cambridgeshire and were running the Five Bells pub on Cherry Hinton High Street. Edward was marked on the 1891 census as also being a gardener, so he seems to have combined both jobs. By 1901 they were running the Duke of Gloucester pub at 35 Prospect Walk, and Edward was marked on the census as being a publican and groom. In 1911 Lavinia and Edward were living with their sons Edward Frank and Edward Fred at 37 Norfolk Street. Edward by this time was working as a coachman in a livery yard. Lavinia died at 37 Norfolk Street aged 66 years old.
Edward Sayer (1 April 1863 – 31 October 1951)
Edward was the son of John and Caroline Sayer and was born in Preston-next- Wingham in Kent – a village just outside Dover. His father was a publican and agricultural worker who ran the Swan Inn in the village for over 40 years. Aged 18 Edward was working as a gardener at Bourne Park House in Bishopsbourne.
After he was widowed he went to live with his son Edward Frank and his family at 20 Norfolk Terrace and 1939 was described as a retired gardener. He died at Norfolk Terrace aged 88 years old.
