Thomas Scott (c.1822 – 16 January 1884)

Thomas was born in Hauxton, a village five miles south east of Cambridge and married Hetty Pink in 1849. They had at least six children: William Scott (1852-), Mary Ann (1855-), Emma (1857-), Henry John (1859-), David James (1862-1888) and Ruth (1864-1878). Thomas worked as a farm labourer and the family lived at Hill Farm and White Hall Farm,  Great Shelford. By 1881 they had moved to 60 Sturton Street, and later moved to Gwydir Street. Thomas worked as a bricklayer’s labourer. He died by being knocked over by a train and an inquest was held into his death.  The court heard that several railway workers had seen him making his way to the crossing at Coldhams Lane.  It was a foggy evening and some of them had warned him of the oncoming trains.  The inquest heard that he had good sight and good hearing, and although no one saw him being struck by a train he was found  ‘in the four foot up way’ at about ten past five. John Ince who lived at Railway cottages said that Thomas took that way home ‘to cut a corner off because the road was so rough’, and he had warned him of the danger.  No train driver reported having hit anyone, and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. The  funeral was held on 22 January.

David James Scott (1862 – 1 December 1888)

David was born in Great Shelford and aged 18 was working as an apprentice to a bootmaker. He died at 4 Adam and Eve Street aged 26 years old.

Hetty Scott (née Pink) (1821 – 27 March 1907)

Hetty was born also in Hauxton and baptised there on 20 May 1821. She was the daughter of William and Ann Pink and married Thomas Scott when she was c.28 years old.  After she was widowed she lived at Adam and Eve Street and worked as a laundress (at least 1891 to 1901). She died at 49 Kingston Street and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 1 April 1907.
