In Loving Memory of ARTHUR SMITH who died May 14. 1931.

Arthur Smith (c 1868 – 1931)
Arthur was born in Cambridge to Frederick, a college servant, and Mahala, a laundress. He was brought up in Little St Mary’s Lane. Arthur became a carpenter. He married Sarah on February 18th 1892 in Harston, Cambridgeshire. They lived at 4 St. John’s Road, Park Parade in an eight roomed house. Their only child Arthur Frederick Kenneth died as an infant and is also buried at Mill Road Cemetery. Arthur worked for builder, Mr Prime, but in 1921 was out of work as he suffered from epileptic fits.
Sarah Bond Smith (née Parker) (1866 – 1946)
Sarah was the daughter of Henry, a coachman and Rachel (née Bond). She was born in Harston and baptised there on 3 March 1867. She grew up on the High Street in Harston and aged 14 (1881) was working as a nursemaid for the Wiles family, who lived on Warkworth Street. She later worked as a housekeeper for widow Mary Ekin who lived at 3 Mortimer Road (1891) before marrying Arthur Smith. After she was widowed Sarah continued to live at St. John’s Road, but died at Addenbrookes Hospital.
4 St John’s Road was sold at auction in January 1947 by Hockey’s Estate Agents. By then it consisted of six rooms and bathroom, and was sold leasehold with a ground rent of £3.
