Monument

These kerbstones, located in the parish of All Saints, lie on the north corner of the central path and the north path. There is a break in the north kerb where a self set tree has grown. The carved inscription is now hard to read.

In Loving Memory of my dearest husband WILLIAM T SMOOTHY d Dec 8th 1942

William Taylor Smoothy (21 March 1870 – 8 December 1942)

William was the son of Charles and Mary Smoothy and was baptised on 3 July 1870.  He grew up at 13 King Street and his father worked as a greengrocer. Aged 21 William was living at home and working as a gardener. He married Sarah Butler (1867-1959)  on 6 September 1899 and they had at least two children; Phyllis Gwendoline Mary (1900-1976) and Malcolm Taylor (1907-1986).

Later William worked as a greengrocer and the family lived at 8 Malcolm Street (1911).  From at least 1916 to 1939 he was running a Lodging House from 8 Malcolm Street. He is believed to have died in London.
