One consistent problem in researching this family was the conflicting dates and ages that were recorded from census record to census record. They have been double checked and the dates below are believed to be correct.
Julia Speechly (1830 – 26 September 1872)
Julia was born in Oundle and baptised there on 19 May 1830. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (née Donkin) Speechly and her father was a merchant’s clerk. The family moved to live at Annesley Place, Cambridge by at least 1846. She later lived with her parents at 3 Panton Street (1861/1871). Julia’s recorded age did vary between census records – in 1851 she was 20 years old, in 1861 she was recorded as being 26 years old and in 1871 as being 35 years old. She died in Margate aged 42 years old, although her age was recorded as being 35 years. Her body was returned to Cambridge and her funeral took place on 1 October.
Edwin Speechly (c.1836 – c. January 1894)
Edwin was also born in Peterborough and baptised there on 13 January 1836. In 1861 he was lodging at Cambridge Road and working as a railway station superintendent. Little else is known of his life. He died in Cambridge and his funeral took place on 3 January 1894.
Claude Speechly (9 July 1838 – April 1901)
Claude was born in London baptised at St. George’s Church, Hanover Square on 20 January 1839. He lived at 3 Panton Street and worked as an artist. At least one of his paintings has been identified and he also gave painting lessons from 31 Trumptington Street. He died at Panton Street and was buried on 4 April 1901 at Mill Road Cemetery. He died aged 62 years old, but his age was recorded as being 59 years.
Emma Speechly (1837 – 20 November 1929)
Emma was baptised in Peterborough on 22 February 1837. She lived with her sister Elizabeth at 7 Panton Street and died there aged 92 years old (although records of her death document her age as being 84 years).
