Emily Mary Spurgin (née Cahill) (May 1870 – 31 August 1926)
Emily was the daughter of Michael and Mary Ann (née Amey) and was born in Sudbury where her mother ran a cook shop at Cross Street. Both her parents were originally from Ireland, and it is believed that Michael was a pensioned sailor when she was born. After he died in July 1877 Emily grew up in Sudbury with her mother and aged 20 was working as a domestic servant. Emily married Robert Spurgin in 1892 in Sudbury and they had thirteen children: Fred Stephen (1895-1947), Helen Florence (1896-1981), Stephen (1899-1976), Sidney George (1900-1968), Ivy Anna (1902-1903), Arthur Frank (1906-1967), Ernest Wilfred (1908-1987), Ruby (1910-), Bert Robert (1911-1985), Olive Veronica (1913-1988) and a further three children who died as infants. The first three children were born in Sudbury and daughter Mary Ann was born in Rochford, Essex, but they had settled in Cambridge by the time Sidney was born in November 1900. Robert worked as railway engine driver and they lived at 11 Charles Street. Emily died at home and her funeral took place on 4 September 1926.
Robert Archer Spurgin (26 August 1866 – 10 April 1944)
Robert was also born in Sudbury and was baptised at All Saints’ Church on 22 October 1866. He was the only son of Robert Finch Spurgin (1824-1877) and Ann (née Archer) (1843-) and his father ran the Brewers Arms pub at Church Street. After Robert (Snr) died, he lived with his mother and two sisters at 50 Cross Street. Anna was a sausage maker, and aged 14 Robert was working as a labourer in a factory (1881). By 1891 he was working on the railway as an engine cleaner and married Emily Cahill the following year. In 1939 he was still living at Charles Street with his children Arthur and Olive and was recorded as being retired. He died aged 77 years old and his funeral took place on 13 April 1944.
